On Saturday, October 3, 2026, the Department of Translation at the College of Languages, Nawroz University, held a symposium titled “Kurdish Translation in the Digital Age: Artificial Intelligence, Innovation, and New Horizons.”

The symposium was attended by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mevan Arif Abdulrahman, President of Nawroz University; Prof. Dr. Hoger Taher Tawfiq, Vice President for Administrative, Financial and Student Affairs; and Prof. Dr. Ameen Abdulqader Omar, Dean of the College of Languages and Acting Head of the Department of Translation, along with academics, lecturers, and students.

The symposium featured three presentations: “Translation and Artificial Intelligence: Challenges and Opportunities” by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Shivan Shlimon Toma from the University of Duhok; “The Kurdish Language and the Challenge of Existence in the Digital and Artificial Intelligence Age” by Dr. Lezgin Chali from the Kurdish Academy; and “In the Era of Artificial Intelligence: Needs, Capabilities, and Professional Challenges of Interpretation” by Dr. Muhammad Seifaddin from the University of Mosul.

The speakers discussed the opportunities and challenges AI presents for translation, with particular attention to strengthening the Kurdish language’s digital presence and expanding its linguistic resources. They also emphasized the importance of equipping students and translators with the skills to use AI effectively as a tool that supports, rather than replaces, human linguistic and professional expertise.
